Vrbo is preparing to roughly double the commission it collects from hosts, according to the company, a move that brings its pricing closer in line with what Airbnb already takes from listings on its platform. For hosts who built their business around Vrbo's historically lower take rate, the math on every booking is about to change.

Vrbo has spent more than a decade positioning itself as the cheaper alternative to Airbnb for commission-sensitive hosts, particularly owners of larger whole-home properties who list on both platforms and watch margins closely. That gap has been part of the pitch for sticking with Expedia Group's brand even as Airbnb's search traffic and booking volume pulled ahead in most US markets. Closing it removes one of the few concrete reasons an owner would choose Vrbo over Airbnb on cost grounds alone.

What changes for hosts running the numbers

The company says the increase applies to the standard host commission, not the separate guest service fee that travelers pay at checkout. That distinction matters for anyone pricing a listing to stay competitive: a host who absorbs the higher commission without adjusting nightly rates takes a direct hit to net revenue, while one who raises rates to compensate risks losing bookings to properties still priced under the old model, at least until the increase becomes standard across the platform. Hosts running multi-property portfolios across both Vrbo and Airbnb will need to rework their channel-by-channel margin calculations rather than treating the two platforms as roughly interchangeable on cost.

Why Vrbo is giving up its price advantage

Expedia Group has pushed for years to get more revenue per booking out of Vrbo, including past changes to subscription pricing and payment processing fees that drew complaints from longtime hosts. Matching Airbnb's commission more closely gives Vrbo more room to invest in search ranking, marketing and the kind of platform features Airbnb has used to pull ahead on bookings, but it also strips away the pricing argument that kept some hosts loyal despite Airbnb's larger reach. Whether traveler-facing fees eventually rise too is not yet addressed; the company has not said if or when guest pricing will shift to match the new host economics.

Hosts weighing a response have limited options in the short term beyond adjusting rates, trimming add-on fees, or shifting marketing weight toward direct bookings and other channels to offset the lower margin on Vrbo-sourced reservations.
