Airbnb has started letting guests book rental cars directly through its app and site, adding a third travel category alongside stays and Experiences. The company says the feature lets travelers arrange a car for the same trip they're already booking a stay for, without leaving Airbnb to search a separate rental site.

What guests can now book

The car rental option sits inside the existing Airbnb interface, positioned as a add-on step during or after booking a stay. Airbnb has not published pricing, coverage details or which rental partners are involved, so hosts and guests alike are working from the company's own framing for now rather than independently verified terms.

Why hosts should care about a car rental button

This isn't really about cars. It's about how much of a traveler's trip spend Airbnb can capture before a guest ever opens another app or website. Every dollar routed through car rentals, Experiences or in-app services is a dollar Airbnb can track, upsell against and use to justify keeping guests inside its ecosystem rather than rebooking through a host's direct site next time. For professional hosts and property managers who compete on guest retention and repeat bookings, that's the more concrete threat: platform loyalty built on convenience, not on the property itself.

The practical impact on occupancy or rates is close to zero in the short term. Nobody books a rental car and picks a different vacation rental as a result. But operators who rely on Airbnb's app for check-in instructions, guidebooks or upsells should note that the company keeps adding reasons for guests to stay inside its walls for the full trip, not just the stay.

Part of a wider pattern, not a one-off

Car rentals follow a string of similar moves this year, including Airbnb's tie-up bringing Tripadvisor's tour catalog into its Experiences tab and a separate push into luggage storage services announced alongside the car rental news. None of these individually reshapes demand for short-term rentals. Together, they read as Airbnb positioning itself as a trip-planning layer that happens to include lodging, rather than a lodging marketplace that happens to sell extras.

For hosts, the sensible response is unglamorous: keep guest communication and any upsells (parking advice, local transport, luggage drop-off) inside your own channels where possible, so a guest's reason to open the Airbnb app stops at check-in rather than extending through the whole trip.
